Data At Your Desk Seminar in Chicago

An AERA-EWA Data Fellowship Program for Journalists

The Education Writers Association and American Educational Research Association are joining forces to offer a fellowship program for journalists interested in broadening their understanding of education data. Reporters and editors chosen for the fellowships will attend an intensive joint data workshop, as well as data-oriented sessions at EWA’s 68th National Seminar hosted by The University of Chicago and AERA’s 2015 Annual Meeting in the Windy City.

In a joint workshop April 19-20, EWA and AERA will offer education reporters training on large-scale education data sets; data resources that they can use at their desk; and how to use and access data tools. The seminar faculty will include top scholars known for their use of major national and international data sets as well as their statistical and methodological savvy. Through this workshop and related activities at the AERA conference, journalists will gain a deeper appreciation of how to use publicly available data and how to access researchers with relevant expertise.

Participants will then have an opportunity to deepen their knowledge of education data during EWA’s National Seminar, which will feature sessions on a wide array of subjects around the economics of education. Sessions are expected to explore such data-rich topics as education funding, standardized testing, school choice, early education, high school graduation, and college affordability. The National Seminar immediately follows the Data at your Desk event.

EWA will reimburse reporters for travel, lodging and registration costs related to both the Data at your Desk and National Seminar events.

Apply today. The deadline is February 23, 2015. Applicants selected to attend Data at your Desk will receive an email guiding them through registering for the data workshop and National Seminar.
