“Miseducation: Exploring the Data on Racial Gaps”

About the Entry

Based on civil rights data released by the U.S. Department of Education, ProPublica has built an interactive database to examine racial disparities in educational opportunities and school discipline. Look up more than 96,000 individual public and charter schools and 17,000 districts to see how they compare with their counterparts.

Comments from the Judges

“With the use of an interactive database, this reporting project encouraged and helped launch an impressive number of stories nationwide exploring the racial gaps in students’ academic performance; how black children often don’t even get a shot at a rigorous education or effective teachers.”

“The story starter recipe and the ready availability of data that has been cleaned and crunched is indeed a service.”

“The focus on Charlottesville, Va., with its history of school segregation, helped explain how the black-white gap is deeply rooted in this nation’s racial past.”
