2019 Features (Large Staff) Finalist: Casey Parks
About the Entry
Casey Parks blended the moving story of Danielle Metz with court documents, newspaper archives and academic research to show what might be possible when policies are changed, obstacles are removed, and supports are put in place to steer vulnerable students to and through college.
Comments from the Judges
“This is a very strong case study exploring the obstacles and opportunities that those in the criminal justice system and, later, with criminal records, face in trying to obtain an education. Parks skillfully incorporates the policy explainers at just the right moments when the reader is wondering why Danielle experienced what she did, all the while creating a piece with forward momentum throughout.”
“Great story on highlighting a systemic problem through one person.”
