2019 Public Service (Larger Staff) Finalist: The Boston Globe Staff
“The Valedictorian Project”
About the Entry
A team of journalists from The Boston Globe tracked down more than 100 valedictorians from 2005-2007 to determine what happened to Boston’s brightest students. The answers painted a mostly disappointing picture for those from disadvantaged backgrounds. The project triggered a citywide debate about whether public schools do enough to prepare students for success.
Comments from the Judges
“A conceptual master stroke, and a really beautifully reported idea. I felt for these young people as I read their stories. I came away admiring their strength, while wishing the system could have done better by them.”
“The Boston Globe found an ingenious way to illustrate educational inequity. The effort was ambitious, full of compelling human examples, powerful photography and graphics.”
