Online Reporter Caucus: Understanding the New Higher Ed Landscape

Since President Donald J. Trump returned to office in January, he has issued several executive orders impacting higher education, including bans on DEI programs and funding cuts that threaten university-based research. While courts temporarily blocked some of these actions, many colleges and universities are struggling to respond to the mounting challenges.

Some universities have already made changes, including announcing hiring freezes and limiting Ph.D. programs. Meanwhile, students of color and LGBTQ+ students are faced with unwelcoming spaces and shuttered centers on campus because of the federal – and sometimes state – bans on DEI at schools. At the same time, the status of student loan forgiveness, income-driven repayment plans and other financial aid is still up in the air.

As part of a new virtual caucus, the Education Writers Association will help reporters make sense of the quickly evolving landscape for higher education students, staff and communities.

Reporters will have the opportunity to share ideas, exchange tips and collaborate. By bringing together diverse voices and perspectives, EWA aims to help reporters stay ahead of the news cycle and deepen their understanding of the evolving landscape of education policy.

The first online meeting is March 20 at 1 p.m. Eastern. Speakers will kick off the program with a candid discussion on how postsecondary leaders are responding to the Trump administration’s push to overhaul both funding and oversight of higher education.

This caucus is only for active EWA journalist members. Future virtual caucus meetings will be scheduled soon! Register today to join the first call! Space is limited.
