Uncharted Waters: What to Know About Federal Education’s Overhaul

As President Donald Trump pledges to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education, his executive orders have left school communities and colleges scrambling to comply, wondering how to, or actively resisting while also bracing for potentially devastating funding cuts to programs and services.

Hundreds of millions of dollars in education research have already been cut, and there are plans to scale back staff responsible for overseeing everything from how Title I funds are distributed to high-need schools to oversight of federal student loan programs. In line with the new administration’s priorities, the department’s Office for Civil Rights has already begun targeting districts accused of violating a new ban on programs and services aligned with Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI).

There are many lingering questions:

  • What changes can the Trump administration make unilaterally, and which decisions require Congressional buy-in?
  • What happens if the self-titled Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) presses ahead without Congressional approval?
  • How quickly might cuts to federal funding for school-level programs and services be felt?
  • What short-term challenges should reporters focus on immediately, and what are the longer-range implications that might play out over the coming months and years?

Join the Education Writers Association for a journalists-only webinar on March 10 at 2 p.m. Eastern. We’ll look at how the U.S. Department of Education’s unprecedented policy changes affect K-12 and higher education.

  • What questions should you be ready to answer from parents and students?
  • What questions should you be asking principals, superintendents, and college and university presidents?
  • Where can you go for trusted information and data, especially as the Trump administration shutters federal databases and other resources?

Expert journalists and a school finance policy expert will help you make sense of the chaos. As always, we’ll leave plenty of time to answer your questions.
