Political change has cascaded to the K-12 level in recent months and could have a huge impact on public schools and districts in the 2025-26 school year.
The Trump administration has issued edicts around education issues, including banning diversity, equity and inclusion efforts in K-12, which is being challenged in courts. The administration has also issued orders that are less well-known, such as rejecting policies that recognize racial disparities in school discipline.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Education cut its workforce by half and canceled scores of research and data collection contracts. And this summer, the administration suddenly froze nearly $7 billion in funding and later reinstated it, leading to a temporary halt in crucial grants for school districts.
