Higher Education Editor
EdSource, a non-profit education journalism organization in California, is seeking an experienced editor to lead the organization’s higher education coverage, including deeper or investigative high impact stories, serve as a key partner on the organization’s senior leadership team.
The successful candidate would have a record of work that includes projects and investigations that are data-driven and include multimedia storytelling. The ideal candidate would have 10 years or more of experience as an editor, along with strong writing skills. The ideal candidate would also have some experience covering or editing coverage of education.
EdSource values collaborative, collegial candidates who can work with reporters with a different range of skills and experience. The successful candidate will work creatively with a team that includes specialists in data analysis, data visualization, web development and social media. This editor would uphold rigorous journalistic standards. The person stepping into this role is expected to take the lead on projects currently in progress, as well as help launch new projects on a regular basis. Experience managing sometimes complex collaborations with both digital-native and legacy news organizations is a major plus.
EdSource, which has the largest staff of education reporters in California and one of the largest nationwide, has a track record of producing award-winning work at both the national and state levels.
EdSource’s headquarters are in Oakland, though this editor could work remotely from elsewhere in California.
Qualifications:
- At least 10 years of experience, preferably including working with a daily journalism publication;
- Ability to set, lead and execute a strategic vision for a wide range of coverage, along with the ability to distill complex education topics;
- Enthusiastic leader with team-building skills that encourage collaboration and innovation;
- Proven supervisory skills;
- Ability to work collaboratively with editors and reporters;
- Excellent editing skills, with the ability to clarify complex issues for a general audience;
- Ability to work independently under tight deadlines;
- Creative self-starter who is eager to explore new ways of covering education issues and create high-impact multimedia storytelling;
- Some experience in education journalism preferred.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Edit stories with impact in a variety of styles and formats.
- Provide regular feedback and coaching.
- Work with other team members to develop new ways to reach and grow EdSoure’s readership.
- Other duties as assigned.

The hiring range for this position, which is based in California is $100,000 – $120,000. Higher compensation may be available for someone with advanced skills and/or experience.
