Learn About Fellowships

The Education Writers Association is pleased to announce a call for proposals for its 21st class of EWA Reporting Fellows. These fellowships provide financial awards to journalists, helping them undertake ambitious enterprise reporting projects.

For the fall 2025 fellowship round, EWA offers both full and micro-fellowship opportunities.

  • Full fellowships will provide financial support up to $10,000 for in-depth higher education reporting on men of color, including opportunities and challenges they face seeking postsecondary education, and access and equity issues affecting low-income and first-generation students.
  • Micro-fellowships up to $5,000 are for in-depth reporting on a range of issues related to special education.

Please carefully review our FAQs to see these topics and other critical information.

“The EWA Reporting Fellowship is a unique opportunity for our journalist members to kick-start their work as the new academic year gets underway,” said Kathy Chow, EWA’s executive director.

To date, EWA has supported more than 130 projects, resulting in high-quality, impactful education stories in various media in communities nationwide.

EWA selects reporting fellows through a competitive application process. Recipients have significant flexibility when using the funds, including travel for reporting, relief from regular newsroom duties and attending workshops. Fellows will have until July 15, 2026 to publish their project stories; some flexibility in the deadline may be available.

The application deadline is 8 p.m. Eastern on Monday, Oct. 6. Recipients will be notified of their status by early November.
