Steph Smith

Content Director

Steph Smith is the content director for the Education Writers Association. She is responsible for managing strategic content creation, development and training.

Steph has worked at the intersection of journalism and education for more than two decades. Before joining EWA, she was editor-in-chief at Teach For America, where she led a team of writers and editors reporting on inequity in education. The team took great care to center people most proximate to systems of inequity in their reporting.

She also spent many years as an editorial director at Scholastic overseeing news magazines for students. There, she worked with her teams to get young readers engaged in reading news and to understand the power of their voices and civic engagement. Steph got her start in journalism as a correspondent and daily news reporter at newspapers in Connecticut. She holds a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Connecticut.
