Child Care Policy and COVID-19: A Roadmap for Education Journalists

About

Many education journalists covering the pandemic’s impacts on children and families are diving into the early learning and child care beat for the first time, given the massive disruption to this sector in communities nationwide. EWA is here to help!

Effectively covering the early learning and care sector requires understanding the complex world of child care policy and funding, including a dizzying array of federal and state programs, as well as costs, subsidies, reimbursements, eligibility, and tax credits.

In this journalists-only webinar, experts unveil a new tool — available on an embargoed basis to journalist attendees — for examining 0 to 3 policies and their track record for success. They also explain:

  • the current disparities in access to quality care for infants, toddlers, and young children across racial and ethnic groups;
  • how those disparities are exacerbated by the pandemic; and
  • how policy choices and systemic racism are fueling the divide.

In addition, the speakers — top experts in early education policy — answer your most pressing questions about early learning amid the COVID-driven upheaval.

The evaluation tool, informed by research identifying the strongest policies for supporting the developing 0-3 brain, will be updated annually, offering a clearer picture of the long-term impact that the pandemic is having on infants, toddlers, and their parents. The tool also can be used as a resource for generating questions to policymakers, philanthropies, and nonprofit leaders who claim to have the best solutions to the ongoing challenge of child care.

This webinar was presented on September 10, 2020.

Registering to attend this webinar constitutes an agreement to abide by the terms of the embargo.
