Know the Score: Finding Stories in College Scorecard Data

About

How many first-generation students does a college have? How much does the school charge students from families earning $30,000 versus more than $75,000? And how many students are repaying their student loan debt three years after college?

There is one quick source that can answer these questions and many others. The federal College Scorecard, which underwent an update this month, houses roughly 2,000 columns of data for nearly every college and university in the United States. Students’ income six years after graduation, the number of veterans enrolled, and so much more is at your fingertips—if  you know where to look.

To help you master this valuable resource, the Education Writers Association is hosting a webinar aimed at explaining the Scorecard’s features, plus a deeper look at two core data buckets: earnings data of former students and student loan repayment statistics. Our speakers – a leading analyst and two data-wise reporters – will show you how to download and scrutinize the data, and plan stories you could be writing about colleges near you.
