Survey of Teen Voters: What’s on Their Minds as Election Nears?

Millions of young people — including many college students and some still in high school — will get their first chance to vote in a general election in November. What is on the minds of these youths, who have come of age in the time of President Trump and when the school shootings in Parkland, Fla., have helped to catalyze a surge of student activism?

Originally presented for journalists-only, this webinar reviews the results of an Education Week Research Center survey of 18- and 19-year-olds. The nationally representative data addresses how youths’ voting plans are being influenced by their school experiences, the high-profile attention to school shootings, and their desire to support or oppose the Trump administration’s priorities. Also, the data reveals the prospective first-time voters’ top issues of concern, sources of information for voting, and even why some may choose to sit out the November elections.
