Teens, Screen Time and Social Distancing During the Coronavirus Pandemic

About

Building strong and positive relationships with peers is a key ingredient to healthy adolescent brain development. With social distancing guidelines in place in response to the new coronavirus, how will teens maintain their relationships and why does it matter?

In what ways might teens’ savvy with technology help them cope? What impact will the stresses of a scary disease and economic turmoil have on youths’ mental health? Will sheltering-in-place have a disproportionate social-emotional impact on teens as compared with adults and young children?

This webinar explores these and other questions. Along the way, we discuss the importance of adolescent friendships, the social and developmental roles screen time can play during the pandemic, and what questions journalists should ask.

This webinar was presented on April 9, 2020.

Denworth and Odgers talked about the creativity of youth in the ways they connect and mentioned the Chino Hills High School Chamber Singers, who were originally supposed to perform at the annual Chino Valley Unified School District (CVUSD) Choral Festival. When it was canceled, the chorus demonstrated resilience by recording their individual a cappella portion of Over the Rainbow in their separate homes. The video is being shared by EWA with the permission of the CVUSD.
