The statistics about layoffs in journalism are becoming depressingly common.
Beginning in mid-August, Gannett, the nation’s largest newspaper chain, laid off 400 employees and cut 400 open positions. A third of large newspapers experienced layoffs in 2020. Between 2008 and 2019, newsrooms in the U.S. lost about 27,000 jobs.
