Experts have long warned of a “looming mass exodus of principals.”

Today’s principals navigate a more politically charged environment and juggle more demanding job responsibilities, typically with fewer resources and less support.

So far, the latest data from the National Center for Education Statistics reveals a slight uptick in turnover and attrition nationwide. Around 11% of public school principals left the profession during the 2020-21 and 2021-22 academic years. Reports of job satisfaction remain low.

Learn about the broader implications at an Education Writers Association webinar on Aug. 30 at 12 p.m. Eastern. Experts discuss what increased principal turnover and attrition mean for students and teachers, and what the data tells us about vulnerable student populations at greatest risk.

Find out what efforts are underway to develop and diversify the principal pipeline. Hear from an administrator who successfully participated in the Illinois School Leader Pipeline Program about the supports that really mattered.
