EWA is delighted to announce an addition to our team: veteran education journalist Kavitha Cardoza. She will serve as public editor for a year while Emily Richmond is on leave for the Spencer Education Fellowship at Columbia University. Kavitha’s first day was June 1.

Emily Richmond, EWA’s public editor since 2011, will spend the 2022-23 academic year researching and reporting on the U.S. Department of Defense’s K-12 schools, which serve more than 67,000 students from military-connected families around the globe.

“Kavitha Cardoza’s remarkable depth and breadth of experience on the education beat will be a valuable resource for our journalist members, and for our organization as a whole,” said Caroline Hendrie, EWA’s executive director. “We are thrilled  that she will be serving as public editor during Emily Richmond’s leave.”

Kavitha was a 2021-2022 Spencer fellow. Prior to that, she covered education and poverty, most recently as a correspondent for Education Week/PBS NewsHour. She has worked at local public radio stations and is a frequent contributor to NPR and The Hechinger Report. She has master’s degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the Manipal Institute of Communication in India. Kavitha has received several awards for her reporting.

Kavitha will help coordinate programming and training opportunities for members and provide individualized reporting and writing help to journalists. She will also host the EWA Radio podcast.
