The Education Writers Association is proud to announce that we have surpassed $1 million in fellowships awarded to journalists.

Since 2016, EWA has worked to strengthen the community of education writers and improve the quality of education coverage through our fellowship program.

“The passion our EWA Reporting Fellows have for their craft is unmatched: We have seen fellows carry out their fellowship project ideas as they navigated an ever-changing media landscape, including layoffs and fewer resources,” EWA Program Specialist Angelina Liu said. Liu works to ensure journalists are properly resourced when working on a fellowship project.

“EWA is proud to have been a part of their journey, whether we provided the support they needed to make their ideas come to life or helped them meaningfully scale their projects to the next level,” she said.

Public Editor Emily Richmond, who oversaw the first fellowships awarded in 2016 and continues to lead the program, pointed to the ability of journalists to continue to do meaningful work in the face of shifting newsrooms.

“This milestone is a testament to our EWA Reporting Fellows who have produced remarkable and impactful education journalism,” she said. “We are honored to have been able to support their vital work.”
