The Education Writers Association is pleased to announce that U.S. Department of Education Secretary Miguel Cardona will speak at its 77th National Seminar in Las Vegas on May 30.
Appointed as secretary in 2021, Cardona will be speaking to EWA members in person for the first time. He previously spoke at EWA’s virtual 2021 National Seminar.
Erica L. Green, EWA’s vice president of journalists on the board of directors, will interview Cardona during the 2024 National Seminar’s kickoff lunch. Green, who covered education for 13 years until 2023, is a White House correspondent for The New York Times.
Their conversation will focus on federal education policy, the Biden administration’s initiatives to improve K-12 and higher education, as well as other issues. This includes mental health, chronic absenteeism and student loan debt.
More than 450 journalists and others have registered to attend the Las Vegas conference. Other notable speakers include Jhone Ebert, Nevada Superintendent of Public Instruction and Angélica Infante-Green, Rhode Island Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education.
