June 3, 2026 (WASHINGTON, DC)—The Education Writers Association is delighted to present the category winners for the 2025 National Awards for Education Reporting, recognizing the top education journalism in the United States.

Covering everything from early childhood to postsecondary education, journalist honorees mined public records, crafted memorable narratives, and built innovative data tools to expand the public’s understanding and awareness on crucial matters impacting students, schools and communities. Winning entries examined the dismantling of the U.S. Department of Education, the fallout of immigration raids, and investigations into school choice programs, special education and inequitable school funding.

EWA announced the category prizes at an awards ceremony during its 79th National Seminar in Baltimore. Each category prize comes with an honorarium of $750.

Judges selected winners from among 349 eligible entries for 17 categories of competition.

More than 100 current and former editors and reporters independently judged the awards competition. Many are past recipients of prestigious journalism awards from EWA and others.

On Thursday, June 4, EWA will honor top-prize winners: The Ronald D. Moskowitz Prize for Outstanding Beat Reporting comes with $2,500, and the Fred M. Hechinger Grand Prize for Distinguished Education Reporting comes with $5,000.

EWA would like to thank all who entered the competition and express our deep gratitude to the busy professionals who volunteered their time to evaluate this year’s many fine entries.
