The Ronald Moskowitz Prize for Outstanding Beat Reporting was awarded to Mandy McLaren of The Boston Globe. She chronicled the experiences of families with children who are supposed to receive special education services. Only beat reporting category winners are eligible for the Moskowitz Prize.

The Fred M. Hechinger Grand Prize for Distinguished Education Reporting was awarded to Emiliano Tahui Gómez, Keri Heath and Tony Plohetski of the Austin American-Statesman. “A Fatal Field Trip” examined the aftermath of a tragic bus crash and tied together disparate strands usually not woven in a news package. The reporters uncovered lax practices by state regulators around the qualification of truck drivers. They also demonstrated the ongoing trauma that young children experienced as a result of the crash. The reporting team was selected from among 14 of 17 category winners in the 2024 National Awards for Education Reporting.

The  competition was independently judged by 103 current and former editors and reporters, many of whom are past recipients of prestigious journalism awards from EWA and others.

EWA would like to thank all who entered the 2024 National Awards for Education Reporting and express our deep gratitude to the busy professionals who volunteered their time to evaluate this year’s many fine entries.
