BOSTON (May 22, 2023) – After record-breaking attendance at the initial Science of Reading Week edWebinars held by Lexia, a Cambium Learning Group company, K12 educators and administrators will now have another opportunity to learn about aligning teaching practices with scientifically-researched methods. Recordings of the dynamic and thought-provoking edWebinars are now available on demand at the Lexia website.
In each edWebinar, industry thought leaders and Lexia’s own literacy experts discussed ways to accelerate students’ literacy gains. Cassandra Wheeler, senior manager of LETRS State Success at Lexia, served as moderator for each of the webinars while presenters unpacked the science of reading through the lens of national public perception, equity, and implementation as well as teachers’ roles and responsibilities.
“Science of Reading Week was one of our most successful learning events,” Lexia Chief Learning Officer Dr. Liz Brooke said. “On average, over 2,400 educators attended each webinar, and the audience was a healthy mix of literacy educators, administrators, and classroom teachers. While live participants had the added advantage of engaging with the large community of educators who were attending and asking questions of the presenters, on-demand viewers will still find a wealth of information on transforming literacy instruction.”
The following recordings will be available on Lexia’s website at https://www.lexialearning.com/resources/webinars/webinars-from-science-of-reading-week-2023:
A Fireside Chat with Dr. Louisa C. Moats
Dr. Moats is the author of the award-winning professional learning program LETRS, the president of Moats Associates Consulting, Inc., and the recipient of awards from the International Dyslexia Association®, Learning Difficulties Australia and The Reading League. She and Dr. Brooke held a fireside chat about the necessity of high-quality professional learning for educators, how LETRS came to be and what’s needed to keep kids on the right literacy track today.
Ask Me Anything with Donna Hejtmanek
Donna Hejtmanek is a former teacher, reading specialist, legislative champion, and the owner of the popular Facebook group “Science of Reading–What I Should Have Learned in College.” She answered questions about the science of reading, implementation, and best practices to help students succeed.
Beyond the Brain: What Neuroscience Can Teach Us About Equity
In this edWebinar, Horacio Sanchez, the president and CEO of Resiliency Inc. discussed brain science with Maya Goodall, Lexia’s senior director of Emergent Bilingual Curriculum, and Kerri Larkin, Lexia’s senior strategic partnership development manager. Cassandra Wheeler moderated as the three talked about the effect of optimal brain function on literacy success, how factors like poverty and lack of resources can impact students’ learning and how neuroscience can help educators better support all their students.
Empowering Teachers to Reclaim Their Joy: A Rejuvenation Conversation
Accomplished educators and educational activists Jacqueline Greer and Dr. Charlene Evans-Smith joined Kerri Larkin, Lexia’s senior strategic partnership development manager, to discuss how educational leaders can shift school culture to one that supports and celebrates teachers, resulting in improved student outcomes.
“The Right to Read:” A Conversation with Kareem Weaver
Dr. Brooke spoke with award-winning teacher, administrator, advocate, and star of the film “The Right to Read” Kareem Weaver as well as Andrea Setmeyer, National Chapter Coordinator from The Reading League. Cassandra Wheeler asked questions of the three for a discussion around the next steps in the fight to make sure all students learn to read.
“In our experience, connecting the science of reading knowledge with instruction enables schools and districts to realize exponential change in just one academic year,” said Dr. Brooke.
