Journalistic Learning Initiative (JLI) and Oregon Department of Education launch “Sassy”: A Cutting-Edge AI Career Exploration Coach for Oregon Students

STEM Educators Select High-Dosage Tutoring as a Top Learning Solution

Eugene, OR — September 10, 2024 —The Journalistic Learning Initiative (JLI) proudly announces the release of “Sassy,” a groundbreaking AI-powered career exploration coach developed in partnership with the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) and the Southern Oregon Education Service District (SOESD). Named for Sasquatch, the legendary “Bigfoot” humanoid creature said to dwell in Oregon’s untamed and wooded regions, Sassy is more than just a tool; it’s a guide designed to assist Oregon students in navigating the complex world of career planning. Sassy lives within CareerConnectOregon.org, the state’s robust resource and communication hub for educators, students, parents, families and caregivers, and industry partners.

Informed by the Oregon Department of Education’s extensive documentation on career-connected learning and work-based learning, Sassy provides invaluable assistance at every step of the career exploration process. From brainstorming potential career paths to honing interview skills, Sassy supports students on their journey to discovering professional and trade aspirations.

Educators and institutions can seamlessly integrate Sassy into their career advising and educational programs, enriching classroom activities, workshops, and individual advising sessions with comprehensive guidance. Sassy’s ability to stay up-to-date with the latest information from trusted sources ensures that students receive guidance rooted in Oregon’s unique economic, cultural, and educational context.

Sassy was developed by JLI’s executive director Ed Madison, who is an associate professor at the University of Oregon’s School of Journalism and Communication, in collaboration with MIT Media Lab researchers at PlayLab.ai, in partnership with ODE and SOESD. Sassy represents a fusion of cutting-edge technology and educational expertise. It is a testament to JLI and ODE’s commitment to empowering youth through innovative educational initiatives.

“We are thrilled to introduce Sassy as a valuable resource for Oregon students embarking on their career exploration journey,” said developer Ed Madison. “With Sassy, we aim to empower students with the knowledge and tools they need to make informed decisions about their futures.”
