National Math + Science Initiative Appoints Education Policy Leader Jeremy Anderson as Chief Executive Officer

Anderson brings over 25 years of policy expertise and a career-long devotion to educational equity and excellence to drive the next chapter of NMSI’s strategic and financial growth

DALLAS, TX (April 27, 2023) –The National Math and Science Initiative, a nonprofit organization committed to closing opportunity gaps and increasing college access through K-12 STEM education, announces the appointment of Jeremy Anderson as Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Anderson’s more than 25 years of policy expertise, including 10 years as president of the Education Commission of the States (ECS), combined with his career-long devotion to educational equity and excellence, will help NMSI elevate its mission-critical work in ensuring that all students reach their highest potential. Effective August 14, 2023, Anderson succeeds veteran astronaut, STEM education advocate and founding NMSI board member Dr. Bernard A. Harris, Jr. after four years of leading the organization as CEO.

“Our economy is rapidly evolving, and the jobs of the future demand proficiency in math and science from every student,” said Anderson. “The National Math and Science Initiative is a tremendous platform to help all students master the math and science skills necessary to move to the next level and provide coaching and training to math and science teachers across the nation.  I am excited about the future of NMSI and the ability to work with such a talented staff of professionals and teacher coaches that all support student success and outcomes in math and science.”

As CEO of NMSI, Anderson will lead the organization’s strategic partnerships by engaging key education stakeholders to drive the next chapter of growth. Anderson brings a wealth of experience from his previous role as president of ECS, a national education policy organization that partners with state policymakers. During his over 10-year tenure at ECS, Anderson grew the organization’s staff from 19 to 55 and expanded their policy expertise to better cater to each state’s unique needs. He also diversified ECS’s revenue sources and fostered a team culture recognized as one of the Top 50 Best Nonprofits to Work For nationally by the NonProfit Times.

“Jeremy’s exceptional leadership skills, outstanding public service record and unwavering focus to our mission of promoting equity in STEM education makes him an invaluable addition to NMSI,” said Shirley M. Malcom, Ph.D., NMSI Chair of the Board. ” Jeremy has an unrelenting dedication to supporting the creation of informed education policies and better education systems for students, from early learning through postsecondary education and the workforce. With Jeremy at the helm, we have a rare opportunity to profoundly influence federal, state and local policies that prioritize equitable learning and revolutionize the education sector by amplifying local voices and fostering partnerships to ensure that STEM education is of the highest quality.”

Anderson built a strong public service record before joining the ECS in 2012. Anderson has provided strategic leadership on education policy design and implementation through multiple projects with national policy organizations such as the National Governors Association, Council of Chief State School Officers and the National Conference of State Legislatures. Furthermore, Anderson has held numerous policy and governmental affairs positions, where he has played a vital role in state and federal education initiatives. Anderson’s strong passion for education is rooted in his upbringing, raised by two Kansas teachers. His wife is also an early learning educator in Colorado, where they reside and raised their three children.

About the National Math and Science Initiative

The National Math and Science Initiative works with communities and local school systems to increase access and achievement in rigorous education, particularly in STEM and especially for students most often underserved and underrepresented in STEM careers. Recent high school graduates who participated in NMSI’s flagship College Readiness Program were more likely than their peers to enroll in four-year college, persist in college, graduate in four years and pursue STEM or teaching careers.
