NMSI and RTI Join Forces with the U.S. Department of Defense in Delivering STEM Education Nationwide
The new agreement offers $190 million over 10-year period to support educator professional development and holistic student STEM programming
Houston, Texas (October 24, 2024) – The National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI) is honored to be awarded a 10-year contract with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) as part of the Defense Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Education Consortium (DSEC) Cooperative Agreement. This agreement provides $190 million to the Research Triangle Institute (RTI) and its network of over 25 regional and national partners, including NMSI, over the next decade.
NMSI will use its portion of the funding to provide its professional development services, offering rigorous training designed to equip educators with the confidence and proficiency needed to excel in teaching STEM subjects. This effort aligns with the organization’s mission to provide every student, particularly those who are furthest from opportunity, equitable access to a comprehensive STEM education.

DSEC’s mission to promote effective initiatives for pre-K–12 students and educators aligns seamlessly with NMSI’s commitment to building a strong foundation that equips students with the tools to develop leadership skills, realize their full potential and meet the future needs of their country. This agreement highlights the DoD’s ongoing need for skilled STEM professionals to address the complex challenges in national defense.
Through data-backed analysis and technical expertise, NMSI and its fellow members of the RTI consortium offer a diverse array of research and insights focused on advancing STEM education and workforce development.
