EdTrust Shares Math Matters: Don’t Count Us Out Event
WASHINGTON — Math skills can make or break students’ access to a pathway to higher education and a fulfilling career, but too many students don’t get the resources, instruction, and support they need to become confident mathematicians.
That’s why EdTrust, as part of its ongoing math equity work, held an event, Math Matters: Don’t Count Us Out, at which educators, advocates, and students discussed how to improve math equity in classrooms across the country.
The numbers are particularly stark for the students who are too often marginalized in the American education system: students of color, students from low-income backgrounds, multilingual learners, and students with disabilities are less likely to have access to strong early math instruction, advanced coursework, and other resources that set them on the path toward math excellence. All students are “math people,” and states, districts, and advocates should do more to ensure that all students have an equitable opportunity to succeed in math.
Beginning in fall 2024, EdTrust convened the Math Learning Network, a group of seven equity and civil rights organizations, to discuss how to make math education more equitable. As a culmination of that work, EdTrust held a panel event with advocates, educators, and students to discuss the need for more equitable math education, and how that should look in classrooms.
Watch video from the event, including discussions about advanced coursework, educator diversity, high-quality instructional materials and more, and stay tuned for more about the Math Learning Network’s findings in EdTrust’s forthcoming Math Policy Framework. Additionally, EdTrust experts are available for interviews on the need for more equitable math education.
