April 3, 2024 (WASHINGTON, DC)—The Education Writers Association is pleased to announce the category finalists for the 2023 National Awards for Education Reporting, recognizing the top education journalism in the United States.

The 2023 finalists looked at complex issues, such as equity in resources, how children learn to read, a new twist on the school-to-prison pipeline, community polarization and legislation targeting DEI in higher education.

This year’s awards included four new categories, including those dedicated to podcasts, data reporting and visualization, and student journalism at the college and high school level.

“We established new categories to broaden the reach of the EWA Awards, and we welcome the results of that change,” said Kathy Chow, EWA’s executive director. “Our finalists brought a variety of innovative reporting methods to the table. It’s especially exciting to recognize student journalists as part of the mix.”

A judging panel of 84 media professionals named 50 finalists in 17 awards categories, as well as three finalists for the EGF Accelerator’s Eddie Prize that EWA administers. The category winners will be announced on May 30 at EWA’s 77th National Seminar in Las Vegas. Each category award comes with a prize of $1,000.

Additionally, EWA will honor the top winners during the 2024 National Seminar:  The Ronald Moskowitz Prize for Outstanding Beat Reporting comes with $2,500. The Eddie Prize  comes with $7,500, and the Fred M. Hechinger Grand Prize for Distinguished Education Reporting comes with $10,000.

Category awards finalists were selected from among 440 eligible entries for the 17 competition categories in EWA’s National Awards for Education Reporting, as well as the EGF Accelerator’s Eddie Prize. The awards competition was independently judged by current and former editors and reporters, many of whom are past recipients of prestigious journalism awards from EWA and other organizations.

EWA would like to thank everyone who entered the competition and express our deep gratitude to the busy professionals who volunteered hours and hours of their time to evaluate this year’s many fine entries.
